Meet the Lower Blepharoplasty Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs lower eyelid and periorbital surgery here and who is responsible for the medical content. The other three physicians contribute what a lower lid assessment often needs: the center’s surgical standards and its experience of revision, the assessment of the skin around the eye and of the eye surface itself, and the dermatologic diagnosis of a lid that is swollen or irritated rather than full.

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Lower eyelid and periorbital surgery · lid position and support · fat removal against fat repositioning

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the examination that comes before any technique is named. He establishes how the lid margin sits against the eye, how much white shows below the iris, how the lid springs back when it is pulled gently away, and how the tear film behaves through an ordinary day, because those findings decide whether tissue can be taken at all. He treats a slack lid as the finding that governs the plan rather than as a detail, and where the eye surface has to be treated first, or where the problem is a hollow rather than a bulge, he says so before an operation is discussed. His stated discipline is to remove less than the fullness would allow, because a lid left slightly full can be revisited and a lid that has been hollowed cannot be filled back.

Clinical focus

  • Lower lid support and margin position as the basis of any operative plan
  • Telling orbital fat from fluid, from muscle and from a tear trough groove
  • The choice between removing fat and repositioning it over the orbital rim
  • Filler and camouflage as the honest alternatives where an operation does too much
  • Revision assessment when a previous lower lid operation has left a lid sitting low

The lid decides how much can be taken

A lower lid that is already lax cannot have tissue removed from it without the margin dropping, and the margin dropping is the complication that defines this operation. That is why the assessment measures the lid before it measures the fat, and why the answer is sometimes to treat the lid's support first and leave the fullness alone for a year.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard the plan has to meet and the backstop behind it. A lid that has been left sitting low by an operation performed elsewhere is usually assessed within his part of the service.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · the eye surface and the skin around it

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is what an operation does not reach: the quality and colour of the skin under the eye, and the assessment of a dry or irritable eye surface, which is the finding that most often changes a lower lid plan rather than cancelling it.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · the swollen or irritated eyelid

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the lid that is puffy, red or scaly rather than full of fat — allergy, eczema and the skin conditions that change how a lower lid looks, that are not surgical, and that have to be identified before an operation is planned.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with the assessment, not the operation

Arrange a consultation. We will establish which layer under your eye is producing what you see, how the lid’s own support limits what can safely be removed, and what the alternatives are, including doing nothing.
